At the opening ceremony, Zhao Yong, Vice President of Xi'an Thermal Power Research Institute, took the lead in delivering a welcome speech, detailing the institute's research layout and engineering practice achievements in the field of energy storage and frequency modulation, thus establishing a good platform for professional exchanges for the competition.
Zhang Zhaohua, Director of the Industrial Development Promotion Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, emphasized in his speech that thermal storage frequency modulation is a key means to enhance the regulation capacity of the power system and ensure the consumption of new energy. The "Demonstration Project of Combined Frequency Modulation of Water-based Organic Flow Battery and Thermal Storage in Fujian Luoyuan Power Plant" won the award for Suqian Times Energy Storage. It was officially completed and put into operation in December 2024. It is not only an outstanding achievement in this competition, but also the first domestic project of flow battery energy storage coupled with thermal power AGC frequency modulation.
This project innovatively integrates water-based organic flow batteries with thermal power units to collaboratively respond to grid frequency modulation demands, effectively enhancing the frequency modulation performance and regulation efficiency of the units. It provides a new paradigm for the integrated application of traditional thermal power and new energy storage technologies.
To achieve this technological breakthrough, the project team conducted in-depth research on the AGC frequency modulation technology for thermal power units assisted by water-based organic flow battery energy storage. They systematically tested the key performance parameters of frequency modulation flow batteries, specifically designed a collaborative frequency modulation control strategy for flow batteries and units, and ultimately formed a mature and reliable coupling control scheme.
Relying on the thermal-storage joint frequency modulation system of Huaneng Luoyuan Power Plant, the project has completed comprehensive on-site verification. The actual operation data fully demonstrates that the water-based organic flow battery energy storage has a significant effect on assisting the AGC frequency modulation of thermal power units.
