When Flexbase began constructing its new technology center in Laufenburg in May, Chief Marketing Officer Raphael Schmid declined to disclose who would supply the planned 800MW/1600MWh battery storage system.
On Friday, the Swiss company announced that Invinity Energy Systems has become its strategic partner for flow batteries. The UK-Canadian joint venture stood out in intense international competition by offering optimal technological solutions and highly attractive overall packages with low levelized cost of storage (LCOS).
Marcel Aumer, founder and CEO of Flexbase, said: "Invinity's vanadium flow battery technology is ideally suited to our project due to its safety, particularly its non-flammability, cycling stability, and application flexibility."
According to Flexbase, this paves the way for an energy storage solution that will set new standards in safety, sustainability, and efficiency. Invinity recently delivered the UK's largest vanadium flow battery. "Now, the company is entering the engineering phase of a project that will become the world's largest vanadium flow battery," said Jonathan Mawer, CEO of Invinity. "Our previous focus on building expertise in flow battery technology has now been recognized at this contract stage."
Invinity also upholds Flexbase's Swiss philosophy and relies on strong local Swiss partners such as Equans Switzerland AG and Georg Fischer AG.
During the engineering design phase, the two companies will develop a detailed integration plan for the energy storage system, focusing on precise coordination of control software and electrical connection to the existing grid. Subsequently, production of the optimized battery modules will be debugged to ensure timely commissioning.
In May this year, Flexbase announced plans to commission the project in the summer of 2028.
