The research team visited the company's exhibition hall, intelligent manufacturing production lines, and the site of the source-grid-load-storage integrated project successfully connected to the grid by China National Offshore Oil Corporation. They gained in-depth understanding of the technical advantages of iron-chromium flow batteries, system integration capabilities, project construction progress, and industrialization achievements, with particular focus on microgrid operations, new energy storage business models, and practical experiences in market participation. 

Yang Rong introduced that as a new pillar industry of the nation, novel energy storage has entered a new stage of high-quality development. With the surge in renewable energy integration and AI computing demands, the market urgently needs high-performance, long-duration energy storage technologies. Iron-chromium flow batteries, leveraging significant technical advantages such as high safety, low cost, scalability, long lifespan, high efficiency, and broad applicability, can effectively address critical bottlenecks in renewable energy integration and grid stability, providing reliable support for smart grids and microgrids. Focusing on the urgent demand of smart grids for advanced energy storage, China Sea Energy Storage is closely following the trend of deep integration between artificial intelligence and energy systems. In collaboration with the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, it has jointly developed the "Molecular-to-Grid Industrial Agent," empowering scientific research with "AI + energy storage" to enhance quality and efficiency. The company has successfully overcome industry challenges including hydrogen evolution control, energy consumption optimization, and cost management, achieving full domestic production of core components such as electrodes, membranes, electrolytes, and stacks. It has shortened traditional annual R&D cycles to just several months and improved the overall performance of industrial-scale power stations by over 100%. Recently, the commercial energy storage power station based on iron-chromium flow battery technology built in Lankao, Henan Province using proprietary core technologies passed expert evaluation organized by the Chinese Society of Chemical Industry, with its overall technology assessed at an internationally leading level. 

Yang Rong stated that Henan Province is accelerating the transformation and upgrading of its energy structure, actively fostering and expanding the new energy storage industry, and offering an excellent business environment along with comprehensive supportive policies, providing solid support for energy storage project development and the growth of upstream and downstream industrial chains. The Lankao intelligent manufacturing base serves as a key pivot for the company to deepen its presence in central China's energy storage market and complete its nationwide industrial layout. In collaboration with the China Academy of Mechanical Engineering Group, the company has established the country’s first fully digital smart factory for iron-chromium flow batteries in Lankao, launching the world’s first intelligent production line for iron-chromium flow batteries. Meanwhile, the company has successively built multiple megawatt-hour-scale energy storage stations in Henan, Hebei, Guangdong, and other regions, covering typical application scenarios such as data centers and industrial parks, and successfully constructed the world’s largest independent iron-chromium flow battery energy storage station in the Greater Bay Area. The successful implementation and stable operation of these major projects have fully demonstrated the technological advancement and broad adaptability of iron-chromium flow battery storage across diverse applications including grid peak shaving, commercial and industrial energy storage, renewable energy integration, and computing-electricity synergy. Leveraging the scale advantages of intelligent manufacturing capacity and accumulated experience from multi-scenario projects, the company has established a complete industrial ecosystem spanning technology research and development, equipment manufacturing, system integration, and project operations, enabling it to robustly drive energy structure transformation and support green, low-carbon development through iron-chromium flow battery energy storage solutions. 

Deputy Director Chang Tiwei fully affirmed Zhonghai Energy Storage's strategic focus on long-duration energy storage, its commitment to independent technological innovation, and its development path rooted in Lankao with expansion across central China and nationwide reach. During the research visit, the team focused on key aspects of industrial development, engaging in in-depth discussions with frontline technical and operational leaders of the company on core topics including the technological advantages of iron-chromium flow batteries, progress in industrial layout, challenges in implementing long-duration storage projects, microgrid grid-connection management rules, capacity-based pricing mechanisms for energy storage, and the construction of diversified revenue channels. The team also conducted detailed inquiries and thorough discussions on policy support needs and practical challenges in electricity market trading. 

This special research visit by the Reform and Development Department of the National Development and Reform Commission highlights the country's high regard for the new energy storage industry and its firm support for new market participants in the power sector.
