European Flow Battery Industry Association IFBF2025: Flow battery industry welcomes turning point
Release time:2025.08.21 Number of views:21

This event marks a critical moment for the flow battery industry, with over 350 attendees including industry leaders, policy makers, and developers announcing major flow battery projects. This year's IFBF showcased the growing appeal of flow batteries, with a focus on technological advancements, various business cases, regulatory gaps, successful cases from around the world, and more. Christoph Stelzer, Chief Operating Officer of CellCube, set the tone for the entire event in his keynote speech: "The time for demonstration is over, and it's time to deploy and realize customer value." Stelzer also emphasized the urgency of regulatory reform: "Our industry is ready to scale up. What's missing is a policy framework that acknowledges the strategic role of Long Term Energy Storage (LDES). This includes clear definitions, eligibility for grid services, and market-based incentives. ”This event highlights the tremendous progress in the flow battery industry, which is no longer a technological curiosity but a commercial reality rapidly moving towards widespread market adoption.

The roller coaster journey of the flow battery industry has come to an end. Kees van de Kerk, President of Flow Battery Europe (FBE), stated that the flow battery industry has been in a roller coaster phase for the past few years, but "we have reached a turning point. The market is there, and we must now work together to achieve cost-effectiveness and scalability." The core theme of the entire event is that cooperation and unity among all stakeholders are crucial to accelerate the deployment of flow batteries across the European continent. With the increasing demand for energy security, system resilience, and decarbonization, flow batteries provide a flexible, sustainable, and scalable solution for Long Term Energy Storage (LDES). But their full potential depends on establishing a stable policy and investment environment. Although many flow battery projects are being successfully deployed around the world, especially in the United States, United Kingdom, and China, Europe must catch up. Accelerating deployment requires strong policy support, investment, and the unity of the entire industry. FBE will continue to promote regulatory reform, standardization, and industry coordination to ensure that flow batteries play a central role in the energy transition. The next IFBF will be held in Budapest, Hungary in 2026.
